The low quality of education is a major challenge for Georgia's children. Georgian students underperform in international student assessments. About two-thirds of Georgia's 15-year-old students don't meet basic standards in reading, science, and math. At the K-12 level, Georgia has paved the way for new approaches to education.
The state allows all school systems, as well as individual schools, to obtain charter school status so that they can determine how best to serve their communities.
